Disarray- In The Face Of The Enemy

Entombed went down South and got liquored up real good. That’s one way to describe Disarray’s latest. Disarray soak up everything good about hardcore and along with it some,Black Label Society,Pantera,Corrosion Of Conformity, and any other current, rootsy, bad-ass American metal band you can think of at the moment. The album begins with the battering ram titled “Depths Of The Wreckage” which takes Entombed and adds a litle John Bush-era Anthrax for the extra muscle, bashing down the door of mall-core mediocrity. One thing that strikes me instantly about this cd is the fact that its lyrical themes are positive and uplifting in their own way. The opening lines of “This World” sum up the record and the band’s philosophy completely,”Something burns in my mind, yeah. Through the mile-high flames of hell I walked alone, head held high.” There’s no navel-gazing or teen angst allowed in Disarray’s world. No sirree bob. You’ve gotta be at least 21 and have more than a little balls if you want to drink with these guys. Anyone caught pitying themselves gets smacked upside the head by my favorite track, the 2X4 called “Voice Of Reason”. Call it “tough love” with power chords. In The Face Of the Enemy is to me,anti-grunge. It’s dirty,it’s volatile, but it’s heavy,it’s metal, and it’s got more groove than any band in Seattle ever had, something producer Dave Brockie(GWAR’s Oderus Ungerus) exploits at every opportunity. Disarray just may have come up with the most fiercely optimistic and infectious metal album of 2002 thus far, leaving just about all others scratching their heads, passed out under the table,or on the floor spitting teeth while bassist Vance Wright, guitarist Chuck Bonnet, and drummer Dave Peridore stroll casually out of the tavern. This is one power trio to be reckoned with. The nu-metal fraternity had better mind their P’s and Q’s and stay in their own neighborhood.
