Interview with Don Donni, vocal of Vesperian Sorrow

1. Where does the name Vesperian Sorrow come from??

Vesperian Sorrow defined actually means "sadness from an evening star", or "sadness in the evening time". We all pretty much feel that it is a good name to represent some of the trials and tribulations we have all had in life. As well, it leaves an element of unkowing to keep people wondering what we are all about.

2.What does "Psychotic sculpture" add new to "Vesperian sorrow"??

Well, first I would say that the new album shows that we have we have reached a new level in terms of musicianship, and quality of production. New for us, is a really polished production, but an honest one. What you hear in "Psychotic", is what we do on a daily basis, and yet we manage to obtain a level of consistency that fits right up there with the biggest players in our genre today. I also feel that it allows listeners to realize that we stand out in the over-saturated Death/Black metal scene, especially here in the U.S.

3. What will the third album be like?

I tell you right now, that the third album will be our most seasoned, and complex release to date. We will be doing some special things the next time out, yet retaining the sheer heaviness that we have always had. V.S. will never sell out to any weak-ass, profitable trends. Our next album, and everyone there-after, will always be what we are about, - METAL!!!!!

4: Are you looking forward to touring in Europe??

YES, absolutely! Touring Europe is something that we have been wanting to do ever since Displeased picked us up, and we put out our first album, "Beyond the Cursed Eclipse". Getting over to Europe is something that not many bands like us get to do. I mean if your more commercially acceptable, and the record labels know that they can use you to make them money, then your there in a blink of an eye. We feel that we have a better following in Europe, and the rest of the world, than we do in our own country. So, yeah, we want to get to the mother land and show them what Vesperian are all about!

5. Your style is not very common in the US. What are your musical and personal influences?

Originally, my first influences were the American bands like, Slayer, Anthrax, Dark Angel, Metallica, Exodus, Forced Entry, Exhorder, and all the heavier bands that didn't rely on an image to sell records. Not only did I like the heavy thrash metal, but I totally appreciated what they all stood for. They played music to play music, and whatever came to them was just an added bonus. Eventually, I started getting into the more melodic stuff like Hypocrisy, Dismember, Edge of Sanity, Necrophobic, and Marduk. Don't get me wrong, all these bands are melodic, but they were still brutal as fuck. I liked the idea of mixing the two elements together, which created a fresh new aproach. My band-mates and I just kind of went in that direction, and now I feel that we have created our own style,- DARK FUCKING METAL!!!!!

6.How do you see metal in the new millenium??

Hmmm, I really can't answer that. I could say that I see it really dominating all other forms of extreme music, or I could say that I see it declining, and that it will fall into obscurity. Either way, there is no way of knowing, and I am not the one to say. No matter what though, I will play metal music until the day that it takes my life! Metal Forever!!!!!

7.Do you plan to sign to a European label?

Well, you know, we have been on a European label for over three years now. That is quite an accomplishment for a band from the states, and it makes us rather proud to be able to say that. It has wielded some wonderful things for us, and basically we have had no complaints. We would, although like to get some better exposure here in the U.S., so we will just have to see what happens. We will evaluate all offers that are presented to us, and we will determine what is best for Vesperian sorrow!
