Interview with Stefan Zell of WOLVERINE

>1.Are you a big fan oif X-men or just of Wolverine:-))??

Stefan: I grew up with the Marvel comics so I'm a pretty big fan of all their heroes. I also have a great movie interest so you can imagine how happy I am these days when superhero movies pop up like never before. However, as I have said many times before, Wolverine started out as a side project just because the fun of it. We didn't put any effort in coming up with a name so we just took the first decent idea we came up with and that was "Wolverine". If I would have known the band was to turn to be my main priority I would definitely have chosen another name. :-)

>2.Your latest release- The Window purpose- has been quite well received. Can you tell me what is the story behind it?

Stefan: It is a concept album dealing with second chances and as always with our lyrics we write about subjects that every human can relate to. Feelings like love, sadness, anger, joy and so on are important for me to write about since I am really interested in how humans function in different situations. The album takes a supernatural approach since it tells the story about a man that, after his death, enters a room with several paintings on the walls. He is told to study these paintings carefully since they all represent different important situations from his past life. In other words he is offered a second chance to see what he did good and what he did bad and then continue on to is next life with newfound wisdom. Pretty spaced out, I know, but that's what it's all about. :-)

>3.Your style has been labeled in many ways- Progressive- progressive death metal, death with progressive accents. What is your style in your opinion and how did you get to it?

Stefan: I don't like the term progressive metal since it now has come to mean that we sound a certain way and I don't agree with that. Sure, I guess you could say we are influenced by progressive metal but our focus is not on writing longs songs and have hundreds of signature changes just for the sake of doing so. We want to put a lot of emotion into our songs and we want every part of the song to contribute to the story we want to tell with it. We always try our best to have the music and lyrics working together at all times. I hope that answers your question.

>4.Are you planning for the next album already? What will it be like?

Stefan: We are hard at work writing for it and everything is going amazingly well. It will focus more on groove and moods and it will have a much more raw production than what TWP had. We are also experimenting a lot with effects and stuff like that. In a way it feels just like when I started my first band. The will to experiment with the music and really have a good time doing so is definitely imminent. I think the album will be great since we have matured as composers and we also learned a lot from Oliver and Moschus when we recorded TWP with them. The day we feel we can only do worse it's time to quit. Hopefully that will not happen for a long, long time.

>5. You have just changed your label. was that because of the success of The window Purpose??

Stefan: No, it was simply because we were offered a deal by Elitist/Earache and we felt that if we wanted to move on to the next level with the band we had to sign with a bigger label. DVS is an amazing label and the owner, Ren Janssen, is a very good friend and we try to help eachother with what we do as much as we possibly can. I know DVS will grow a lot within the next few years because the stuff they release is about quality. When it comes to the new deal we are extremely excited! Things are all new for us but Lee, the head of the label, seems to be a great guy and obviously he knows a lot of the business since he has worked with these things for several years. Since all Elitist releases are released through Earache we will also have a great distribution which should mean that our future releases will be available as good as everywhere. Early next year we will see the fruit of our co-operation.

>6. Who is stefan Zell and what makes him tick?

Stefan: At first I thought this would be an easy question to answer but it was far more tricker than I thought... I guess Stefan Zell is a guy who is eager to make the best of his life. I don't want to wake up one morning and be like 80 years old and realize that I didn't follow my dreams, that I didn't have as much fun as I possibily could or that I just did what others expected me to do without really wanting it myself. I also don't want to realize that I didn't show other people respect and didn't try my best to always be friendly or that I really hurt someone deeply for no reason at all. That's why I always do what I feel like as long as it doesn't hurt someone else. Wolverine is one of these things. I love playing with the band and it occupies most of my sparetime. As of now I couldn't live without it. I also have a wonderful life with my girlfriend Jamina. We spend a lot of time together and since we have many interests in common we hardly never have a boring moment together, there's always something to do.  I guess the band, Jamina, my friends and my interests are what's making me tick.

>7. How do you see the metal of the new millenim?

Stefan: I honestly have no idea at all and I've never really thought about it. When it comes to music in general, no matter the genre, I miss bands that are together now that I think will still make music in let's say 30 years from now. I guess it's hard to say now but I just get that feeling. I don't see any Kiss or Rolling Stones of today and that's a shame. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong down the road. If there will be any bands like that I think you will find them in the rock or metal genre.

>>8. How is the metal life in sweden??

Stefan: Also a though question... I find the lack of audience for struggling bands to be imminent but as it seems more known acts are very well received here in Sweden. We have a huge festival called Sweden Rock Festival that attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world so there is definitely a great interest for rock and metal here. I guess the audience is hard to impress but once they are impressed they are really devoted concert visitors. When it comes to bands I think we have a lot of quality acts like Pain of Salvation, Veni Domine, Tad Morose and so on.

>9. a Final word......

Stefan: Take care of yourself and others! Hopefully we'll see you at a show of ours! Thanks for reading!
